Mullen Family (A Preview)

The Mullen & Badolato families have been so great to me, as they’ve continuously asked me to document their family and wedding celebrations. Craig and Jenna were married about a handful of years ago, which seems like yesterday, and now have their adorable son, CJ. We met in Ventnor for some beach portraits, celebrating CJ turning 2. He is social/friendly, curious, adorable and loves the beach. We took a few posed portraits mixed with just letting him run around the beach a bit. We got lucky as just as we “got what we need”, the rain came fast and furious. The Badolato’s were kind enough to invite me into their home to dry and clean off, while generously offering me the comforts their home provided. I love being around their families and honored that continue to be asked to do so. Here are just a few images that made me smile, as I organize the rest of their proof set. Thanks for taking the time!

Bernie Parent

A few months back I was asked to photograph a doctor for a local magazine. Pretty straightforward. The difference this day was that Bernie Parent was going to be there, as he and the doc’ are chummy and he was going to be a part of the ad we were creating. Pretty cool. My expectations were low however, as I assumed Mr. Parent would be distant/reserved and have zero interest in speaking to us common folk. As I arrived I received a call from the editor informing me that the doctor was running 30 minutes late. Doh! Oh well, guess I’ll kill time checking my email and reading about the Flyers season ending loss the night prior. As I’m unloading my gear into the waiting room there’s a friendly personal assistant (doc’s) and a joyous gentleman in the corner, who immediately greeted me. I assume that’s Bernie and by the sound of the accent- yup, has to be! For the next 30 minutes the three of us chatted about hockey, relationships, traveling, how to make the most out of life… It was really enjoyable. Bernie was a really down to earth, friendly, funny… person. He made it comfortable and fun, cutting out any lines of social disparity. Eventually the doc arrived and we had to get on with business. He still made jokes and had fun the entire time, making sure to rib the doc about lunch and golf plans they should make. At the end of our session Bernie shook my hands and said,  in his French Canadian accent: “Jeff, you’re a cool guy. This was fun”. I returned the truthful compliment and felt uplifted as my ignorant expectations were squashed. The only regret was that I didn’t ask Bernie to do one thing:  See, my grandmother is the biggest Flyers fan I know- has been for years. Had season tickets for over 20 years, watches every game to this day. She LOVED Bernie during his playing days and was one of the reasons she got into watching hockey. With the Flyers being eliminated from playoff contention the night prior, I knew she was feeling down. I wanted to ask Bernie to grab my phone and make a quick video telling my grandmother “Helen, it’s going to be okay. The future looks bright and our boys played hard. Hang in there”, or something in that ilk. I couldn’t bring myself to ask him, as I didn’t want to impose. But, I’m very confident that had I- Bernie Parent is the type of person that would not only oblige, but add his humor and personality to it to make it even more special than expected.
Here’s a quick image I grabbed of him as he was sitting against a chair in the waiting room, as I was setting up my lights. Thanks for taking the time. This post is for you, mom-mom! (who’s your favorite grandchild!?!?!) 😉

The Trump Family

* THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL POST*

This is a photography post. As photographers we get to experience a broad range of locations, types of people, requests, gigs… Mending the first sentence here: This is a photography experience post.

I was asked by the kind people at Trump National Philadelphia to photograph a 2 day event coverage as Tiffany Trump graduated from University of Penn.. Without much more info, I agreed. I arrived at the country club and was immediately greeted by the security team. Even though I already passed clearance, I can see how a photographer with his gear can look a bit curious. Once I was cleared again I got the run-down: Donald Trump would be arriving via helicopter, they would sit and mingle over some appetizers and then head off to the graduation at University of Penn in Philadelphia. I would shoot some candid moments along with some casual portraits. Easy enough. I was respectful of their privacy (I didn’t shoot them eating or try to grab any “paparazzi” type of images) and just did what I thought looked best and what was requested. The first day (the day of the graduation) it was much too windy outside to do any photographs, but the second day was gorgeous. On that second day I was able to spend some time with Tiffany, her mother (Marla Maples) and their friends and family. That was the evening of the actual graduation dinner. Donald Trump wasn’t there that evening. Mrs. New  Jersey International 2016 was, though (seen conversing with Marla)!
It was interesting to see the day Donald was there, however. See, I’m not one “blown away” with celebrities. I respect their privacy and how they got to that level (usually), but to me- they’re just other people. Sometimes I dig what they do and sometimes I don’t. But, when it comes down to it: they lay in their bed at the end of the day just like the rest of us. They have insecurities, strengths, family, warts, pets, issues… and in this case- personal achievements.
Tiffany Trump seemed very accomplished in her college achievements. She was kind, appreciative and enjoyed the time with her family. You could tell that she and her mother (Marla Maples) were close. I had fun photographing Tiffany. She was a good model as she naturally knew how to handle herself in front of the camera, as did her mother. It was cool being able to get a glimpse into their family achievement and celebration of Tiffany graduating.
One of my favorite moments that occurred organically was when Donald asked Tiffany to come over to receive his gift (an envelope with her name). Sitting at a table with Tiffany, Marla, Melania, Ivanka and others, Donald said “…just don’t give any to your mother, she already has enough of my money”. Everyone laughed, including Melania, as you can see. Tiffany wrapped the moment in a bow as she posed for a photo with her father, using his thumbs up pose. A moment I would have never experienced if I weren’t photographing their event. That’s what I like about what we do- people trust us to document their intimate moments.
At the time, Corey Lewandowski was running the show and he made sure that Donald Trump got the image of him with the local police force(s). There were police officers from Pine Hill, Mount Laurel, and Medford helping with security. Apparently, they tried to get images of Donald with the local police each location he visited. I was happy to oblige.
Another unique moment was when Donald and Melania went into a wedding that was actively occurring at the venue, in venue’s ballroom. Donald had heard that there was a wedding and said to Melania “let’s go”. The security team quickly rushed to get them down the hall and they luckily caught the bride and groom just prior to their reception introduction. Donald briefly spoke with the couple before going into the ballroom and waving at guests. My favorite photo from the entire event is the image with him and the flower girls. I’m a photojournalist at heart- and that to me is what it’s all about. Trump also went to mingle with the members of the golf club in their bar/lounge area. The people were enamored with him, asking for autographs and photographs as they shook his hand and showered him with compliments. It made me think about that the people that are members there, since it’s changed from Pine Hill Country Club to Trump National Philadelphia and became private, must generally endorse Trump in his presidential run. And on the other side—how many members did they lose during the process?
I’ve always been treated with respect and appreciation from all of the people at Trump National Philadelphia, and Pine Hill Country Club prior. I worked there as a bartender in my early days of trying to swing photography as my full time gig. Since my transition, almost 15 years ago- they have always asked me to be involved or referred me for photography gigs (weddings, website images as they’ve renovated and events). I’m glad they trusted me to assist them with this event as it offered me a neat glimpse into something I might not otherwise experience. Here are a few of the images I enjoyed. Thanks for taking the time!

Brittany & Ren Engagement Session

Brittany and Ren had their engagement session at Johnson’s Corner Farm in Medford, NJ. They were silly, fun and really into each other; which made it fun for me to photograph. We took a tractor ride out to the orchards, got to trek through the pumpkin patch, and even utilized the playground a bit. This session was shot last summer and their wedding, which was held at Brigalias in Sicklerville, NJ will be the post that follows. We had a beautiful fall day with an emotional crowd that was really supportive of their marriage, as everyone celebrated and partied on Halloween.

Thanks for taking the time.

Ashley & Mike Engagement Session

While we’re playing catch-up on the blog postings, I wanted to get this in prior to their wedding this summer. I met Ashley and Mike at the Smithville Mansion in Marlton, NJ, along with her wonderful parents and pooch. We took a few with their dog and then wandered the rest of the mansion as just the three of us. They had a few props that we worked in and it was really cool to get to know them along the way. I found out that Mike is an artist and likes to display his artwork. I love when people open up and share their passions, as it helps me photograph the “true” version of them. As a couple, they were cuddly and cute and they let me into their world for a bit. Some couples choose to pass on engagement sessions, which is sad because it helps both parties learn more about each other, and it really makes the wedding day more comfortable and easier. Here are some of my favorites from their engagement session.

Man and Woman of the Year

Every year South Jersey Magazine selects their Man and Woman of the year. Here are portraits I shot of the selections, Hakop Kazandjian and Valeria Galarza.

DiTanno Family

Matt and I went to Washington Township High School together. I ran into him at his work and we set up a portrait session at Washington Lake Park for his wonderful daughter and son. We got lucky with a beautiful Fall day. I took shots of the kids gallivanting around the park and these are my favorites from that session.

“I am a Witness”

Last summer I had the opportunity to photograph a holocaust survivor for South Jersey Magazine as they were interviewing him about his experience. I photographed most of the session candid during the interview, and at the end he posed for a couple of portraits – these are the ones the magazine chose. It was an honor to hear Charles’ tale of how he made it through. It was very emotional to witness him retell it.

Pennsylvania Ballet

These images were shot for Suburban Life magazine, featuring an article on the Pennsylvania Ballet, located off Broad Street in Philadelphia. Angel (pronounced An-hell) Corella is the artistic director, where he plans to attract new interest in the changing art form of ballet. It was fun working with the ballet dancers while working allegro (fast, as I had 20 minutes to complete the assignment).

Jacob turns 1

October 13, 2013 I photographed Anthony & Katrina’s wedding. I’ll remember that date, as it was exactly our 1 year wedding anniversary. Just a few days shy of two years later, I had the honor of photogrphing their son’s 1 year old photos. We met at a local park and used the fall background as our canvas. Jacob really did all of the hard work, as I was able to just capture his inquisitive and happy expressions against the gorgeous fall foliage. The rest of the session is still in process, but here’s a quick glance at a couple that grabbed my attention.
